Dear Dr Haghighi,
Here are my thoughts on the recent NIKI visit, which you requested earlier. My viewpoint is different from that of the others, since I am neither a medic nor an Iranian. To focus on the aspects you have asked for:
1. The NIKI idea is quite excellent. It would be desirable whatever the political climate, but in the present circumstances NIKI seems to be one of the few channels of international technical co-operation available to Iran, especially to the US and UK. This is implied by Dr Shahidi"s comments, that the British Council is finding it difficult to identify groups to collaborate with. It seems absolutely vital to keep NIKI going.
The key point about NIKI is that the members of the network are themselves Iranians. The Trustees seem to be well-connected, well-respected and totally committed to the cause and objectives of NIKI. I didn"t have to be an Iranian to appreciate and admire the commitment and effort you yourself bring to the group. It"s very impressive.
As I mentioned, NIKI seems to be well-connected with influential people in Iran, especially in the academic world.
I should also say that I think NIKI"s structure and objectives are absolutely right - rational and relevant, and without the slightest political influence.
2. I can only really talk about my programme. The places and people were well chosen, and I think the interest in my topic is now quite considerable. I was particularly impressed with the Institute of Advanced Technology.

3. I won"t comment on the medical side, since I don"t feel this is my area, so I"ll make a few comments about innovation and exploitation of technology.
My overall impression is not unexpected: Iran has some excellent scientists and their technological capability is quite considerable. However, the mechanism of commercial exploitation is not well understood.
…
4. I have a few comments, ALL of which are intended to be positive.
Although in terms of personal background, knowledge of Iran and its language, and also in area of expertise, I was very much "the odd one out", I never felt it to be so. I think this is a big tribute to you, NIKI and the other people on the visit. I was also impressed by the welcome I received from the Iranian hosts at the various establishments I visited.
Second, could I strongly suggest that you consider having an "administrative assistant" for NIKI to take care of the myriad of logistic details involved in such a complex operation as a group visit. I am sure that even for someone as competent and energetic as yourself, this must have been exhausting!
I hope these comments are of use to you. Thank you for including me in the visit. I would be happy to consider further work if appropriate, and I wish NIKI every future success.
Best wishes
Prof John Allen
