NIKI Academic Trip 2007, A Great Success
Once again, NIKI is pleased to report on the completion of a highly successful trip to Iran in 2007. With several years and much experience now under our belt, this year provided us with the most outstanding results yet. With the participation of some of the most prominent academics, researchers and physicians from around the world, we were ecstatic to see each individual bringing something very unique to the table.
NIKI participants had programs at the following 4 medical and 3 non-medical universities as well as 2 research institutes:

Mashhad University of Medical Sciences
Tabriz University of Medical Sciences
Iranian Research Organization for Science and Technology
Bu-Ali Research Institute
Imam Khomeini International University
University of Zanjan
University of Isfahan
At each destination, uniquely tailored programs were organized jointly by NIKI and the host institutions. These included: seminars, symposia, panel discussions, training sessions, medical and surgical procedures, round tables and workshops. An array of diverse specialties represented by NIKI group members included: Liver Transplant Surgery, Pancreas Transplant Surgery, Cardiac Surgery & Heart Transplant Surgery, Cancer Surgery, Gastroenterology, Urology/ Kidney Transplant Surgery, Nephrology, Virology and AIDS, Genetics, Podiatry, Psychiatry, Gynecology, Psychology, Care of terminally ill patients), Science Parks and Innovation Management, Physics and Architecture.
The specific projects and programs of NIKI for this trip were as follows:
General Lectures for faculty, residents and students
Specialized talks and panel discussions; e.g. updates on transplant
Different medical and surgical procedures
Training teams in universities of Shahid Beheshti, Mashhad, Tehran, Shiraz and Tabriz for liver and pancreas transplant
Giving consultation for setting up transplant program for liver and pancreas transplant
Setting up the rudiments for Islet Transplantation Program
ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support) workshops for the first time in Iran
Setting up consultation for Hospice (Care and service for terminally ill patients)
Consultation for establishing department of genetics
Consultation and discussion about different social aspects of medicine and health care in Iran
Negotiation for establishing more international cooperation between Science Parks in Iran and their overseas counterparts
Negotiation for joint educational programs between Iranian universities and overseas institutions.
Negotiation for joint research projects
NIKI also signed a “Contract of Cooperation” with Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences. According to it, Shahid Beheshti will organize part of NIKI activities in Iran as a “Hub” or “Focal Point” of NIKI.
A big thank you to all participants of the 2007 trip! And to those academics that were unable to make it for 2007, let"s start planning for 2008!
